CATs offers a structured approach to learning in well-supported steps. There are three CATs programmes:

Each CATs Step provides all the learning and practice material learners need to prepare for the end of Step test. Available on mobile, tablet, iPad, Chromebook, PC and Mac, CATs is powerful and flexible allowing learners to study at a time and place that suits them.

The CATs journey

Learning and achieving with CATs is easy, quick and effective:

    Register for CATs and take a test to find the right CATs Step for your level.

    Access CATs Step course materials and practice tests.

  • 3

    Work through the materials via the CATs website or the CATs app, on or offline.

  • 4

    Take an end-of-Step test.

  • 5

    Receive results, certificate and feedback within 24 hours.

  • 6

    Move on to the next CATs Step.

CATs Step tests

  • CATs Step tests are based on the learning content covered in the CATs Step course in all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.
  • CATs Steps tests are delivered using an innovative, robust and flexible system.
  • CATs Step tests are statistically validated and aligned to the CEFR.
  • CATs offers online assessment of speaking and writing via state-of-the-art software developed in collaboration with Carnegie Speech using licensed technology from Carnegie Mellon University.

Learners from 5 to 11 years old

A0: Step Into 1 and 2A1: Step Forward 1 and 2

Approximately 30 hours of online materials, including songs and games

Computer-based

CATs Primary materials allow children to begin learning immediately.

A friendly owl avatar, speaking in either English or the child’s first language, gives instructions and guidance through the activities.

CATs Primary includes a Parent’s Guide to help parents understand what is being learned and how well their child is progressing. Printable worksheets are also available to allow learning to continue offline.

Teenagers and older learners

A1: Step Forward 1, 2 and 3A2: Step Up 1, 2 and 3B1: Step Ahead 1, 2 and 3

Computer-based

60 minutes

CATs Core focuses on grammar and vocabulary and includes plenty of opportunity for communicative language practice. This practical approach gives learners the skills to communicate in real-world situations. Grammar, Vocabulary and Video Extra modules provide valuable additional practice. At the lower levels, learners are given the option to have text and audio instructions delivered in their first language.

Older learners, students and employees

B2 to C1: CATs Higher 1, 2 and 3

Approximately 50 hours of online materials, including interactive activities, games, audio, video and texts

Computer-based

3 hours for all 4 skills

CATs Higher helps students and employers achieve higher levels of English language competence in educational institutions and the workplace. CATs Higher includes 40 hours of additional exam preparation to build the skills needed for major English examinations at this level, such as IELTS, TOEFL and PTE.
